Moonlight and Golden Palaces

Each year, to celebrate his birthday, the King of Thailand opens the gates of his Royal Palace to the public at night for one week only. A huge celebration stretches for blocks outside the gates, but inside the palace grounds the street noise swirls away. Swells of locals and tourists funnel through ancient archways, their voices hushed in reverence as they glimpse the sparkling temples and golden palace glittering in the moonlight for the first time. I had the incredible good fortune to be working on a project in Bangkok when this event happened recently. It didn't matter that I was shoulder-to-shoulder, taking slow teeny-tiny steps with thousands of others who turned up.  It was one of the most spectacular and magical places I have ever been. Have you ever been to a place that was so beautiful, it took your breath away?

  4. While visiting Mumbai, we got caught unexpectedly in a wedding procession. There were tons of people dancing in the streets with loud music...the wedding party and guests, but also random people too. The groom was riding on a white horse and the bride was being held up in a carriage thing. The whole event was super beautiful, spontaneous and unexpected. Of course the Taj Mahal is super beautiful and impressive. The love story behind it being built is also really interesting. Just wish I could have been there at sunrise or sunset to see the orange glow given off by some of the stone in the taj!

  6. Nowhere comes to mind right now, but I have a potential trip to Portugal coming up this summer. That should be enough of a change of scenery to offer a beautiful place or two to pop up, I'm hoping.

  7. I don't think I've ever had quite the same experience as you described; however, overtime I have come to "claim" spots as my own that make me incredibly happy and content whenever I am there. One of my favorite is in Berkley, by the International House. It's on a hill and overlooks San Francisco, the Bay, and the Golden Gate Bridge. I walked by there almost everyday my first two years of college, and it always brought me back to reality, no matter what was going on.

  8. That sounds like a great place to be! The most magical place I've ever been was when we went on a cruise a few months ago. I've never been on a ship in the ocean, and there was just something about standing out on deck in the moonlight and seeing miles and miles of nothing...
